When it comes to thrifting, there are some things to keep in mind. Many people misunderstand or judge why someone would go and buy clothes that have already been worn by a stranger. Some people can't imagine getting clothes for less than ten dollars that aren't brand new. The main thing to have when it comes to shopping at thrift stores and consignment shops is an open mind. Without this, you won't be able to find some of possible treasures out there.
Finding hidden treasures is something my mom has always been good at; stumbling across unsuspecting furniture on the side of the road and making it new again, transforming cigar boxes into jewelry boxes, and finding the coolest t shirts and clothes from thrift stores for me. Soon enough, it became our thing we did together, and we still do it all the time. Thrift stores, consignment shops, you name it. In fact, we went to the local Goodwill during parents weekend here at school!

While my mom and I search for different things when we go, it is still a search for hidden treasures and surprises. The range of things you can find is endless: clothes, jewelry, books, shoes, and so many others. The first step is to find someplace to go. The places I always go to are Salvation Army, Goodwill, and local places that differ depending on where you are. I constantly go to the ones near my house, but I also sometimes go to ones when I travel; going to New Hampshire with my family, Maine with my friends, driving through Pennsylvania to get here, and even Florida during Christmas break.
Some of my most special objects are from the most surprising of places. The act of thrifting is giving life to something again, something as cool as a Bruce Springsteen "Born in the USA" concert shirt or nineties "mom" jeans. I can't even tell you how many Penn State shirts and sweatshirts I have from thrift stores that I prefer more than new ones. While this activity can be fun for anyone, it is especially cool for people into fashion or vintage things.
So, from a fellow shopper to another, take a chance on consignment. It holds so much potential if you are in for the unexpected. Put aside your assumptions about thrift stores and consignment shops and adventure away!

I loved this post! Thrifting is definitely one of my favorite things to do, I'm so glad you covered it. There is such a negative connotation that comes with thrifting and I wish that more people would have the stance that you have on it.
